Swan Falls

Flew Swan Falls thursday night. I flew the south end of the ridge. I got about 500 over and flew for about 15 minutes. It was strong and rough. Chuck and Rob both had the same experience just not as long.

Shaw Mountain Sled Ride

It has been a while since I have been out flying. But I found some free time last Sunday and got in touch with Mark and Tyler who where wanting to head out to Shaw Mountain.

The ride up to the summit was uneventful and pleasantly short. We only had to hike about 15 minutes from the parking spot to launch.

The wind was gentle out of the west, with some pretty mellow cycles coming through. Mark being the site expert gave Tyler and I some pointers before launching. Hindsight being 20/20 I wish I would of slowed down and asked for some clarification before I launched.

Mark was recommending that we use our speed bar to get out over the foothills quickly while retaining as much altitude as possible. Basically trading some initial altitude for a better thermaling position over the foot hills. I did use the speed bar to get away from the hill, but since I was making good speed over the ground I amused I had done what Mark was suggesting and quit using it.

I then picked my way down the mountain using pockets of lift where I found them. I turned a couple of times, but couldn’t quite find the lift again. Had I been higher I think that the thermal would have been easier to work, and I might have been able to climb in it.

Tyler landed out about 3/4 of the way down, but managed to relaunch and make his way down to the LZ which turned out to be the football field for the new Middle School on Warmsprings Rd.

Standing at the LZ we had a good view of Mark, who had taken his own advice, as he worked lift over the foot hills. For anyone that knows Mark, this isn’t a big surprise. I sometimes think this guy has stolen the inner ear from a bird.

Once he landed, Mark explained what he was saying on top in more detail. Now having the experience and some perspective I see how we might have extended our flights.

Overall a good time, a good flight and a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Pickle Butte Saturday night glassoff

Saturday was a great day for fall flying. We started out at Swan but the wind never came down so we all went to Pickle Butte. We had 6 of us in the air all buzzing around with no worries on finding lift. It was a good day. I posted a new video at the bottom of the pickle butte page with me flying around the other pilots.
